The Between

Created by The Gauntlet

The Between is a tabletop roleplaying game about monster-hunters in Victorian-era London. It's inspired by the TV show Penny Dreadful, British horror classics, and pulp media. Its rules are based on the award-winning Brindlewood Bay.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

2,000 Backers!
over 1 year ago – Wed, Oct 02, 2024 at 03:14:44 PM

We now have over 2,000 new hunters joining Hargrave House! This is an incredible achievement for The Between, and we're so thankful to those of you who have helped us reach this milestone by backing the project and helping spread the word.

To celebrate 2,000 backers, we've added some stuff from Shadow Society to the Preview Folder, including The Legacy, The Beast, and The Spidersilk Seamstress!

We still have plenty of room in the haunted halls of Hargrave House, so if you haven't yet backed the project, please give it a look!

Thanks again!

Extraordinary Mode
over 1 year ago – Tue, Oct 01, 2024 at 01:08:56 PM

Alright, folks, with The Seven Mummers of Seven Dials now unlocked, and the new achievement revealed, we are officially in Extraordinary Mode! We'll explain that in a bit, but first: join us on the Gauntlet Discord server! As ever, it is the absolute best place to discuss The Between, and maybe even find a game to play in (also: we've shared a preview of The Martian there, so join the server and pick it up!)

Extraordinary Mode

In The Gauntlet, some people play The Between in a way that is less about sexy, dark Gothic horror, and more about pulp-y, science fiction/fantasy adventure. That style of play is informally called Extraordinary Mode (because it's less Penny Dreadful and more The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). Our next three achievements, if unlocked and added to the book, will let anyone play the game in this style. The Martian at $175K adds a Superman-style space orphan to Hargrave House. The Clockwork Cuttery at $185K is a Threat with dangerous automata. And, most of all, at $200K Gesod, High Imperator of Venus will descend on London in his luxurious space frigate, Resplendent. When combined with things we've already unlocked like Mean Times in Greenwich, The Facsimile, and The Monochromatic Men of Three Mills Island, you can easily do an entire campaign in Extraordinary Mode, or combine them to make a fun, mixed-genre campaign (which is actually a little closer to what The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen actually is).

So let's put on our jetpacks and get these achievements unlocked! Please tell everyone you know about this campaign. It helps us a lot when you talk to people about why this game excites you.

As always, thanks so much for your support!

Add-on books now available!
over 1 year ago – Sun, Sep 29, 2024 at 05:03:38 PM

Hello! We hope everyone had a nice weekend. As always, we want to start by inviting you to join us on The Gauntlet Discord server, which is the best place to discuss The Between.

Add-On Books Now Available

A number of folks have asked if they could add additional copies of The Between, Shadow Society, and Suns of Another World to their pledge. We have now made that possible on the campaign page. The add-on price of $35 per additional book is less expensive than the preorder price will be when the pledge manager opens, so if you think you'll need extra books, the time to get them is now.

If you only need one copy of each book, your best value is still one of the higher pledge tiers. The add-ons are strictly for people who want two or more copies of a particular book.

Two Reasons to Consider Increasing Your Pledge

While we're happy for your support at whatever level you want to give it, there are some good reasons to consider increasing your pledge during the campaign.

Everything is the best price it's ever going to be right now
The preorder and retail price for these books will be more expensive than the BackerKit campaign price. If you think there's a possibility you'll ever want more than just the core book, now is the time to grab them if you can.

Shadow Society is growing!
We've unlocked 7 Threats, 3 playbooks, and 1 Mastermind—with more likely to come—and it's all going to be in Shadow Society. You may decide you want all that extra content in your hands in the form of a physical book.

All that said, no matter your pledge level, we're happy you're on this journey with us!

The Preview Edition of Ghosts of El Paso is available for FREE on DriveThruRPG

Some folks have asked for a preview of the campaign settings going into Suns of Another World. Well, you can grab the original edition of Ghosts of El Paso for FREE (Pay What You Want—please pay nothing) on DriveThruRPG! This is the old version of Ghosts, and will be significantly updated for Suns of Another World, but it will give you a good idea of what an additional setting for The Between might look like. It can be found here.

Polls Are Coming

We're still learning the ropes of BackerKit (this is our first campaign on this platform), but one of the Community options that looks interesting is Polls. We have a few things we'd like your feedback on (in particular, which new, unrevealed Playbook sounds most exciting to you), so be on the lookout for a poll in the next day or two.

As always, thanks so much for your support! We've got 32 days to go! Please keep spreading the word!

The Shrouded London Writing Contest
over 1 year ago – Fri, Sep 27, 2024 at 08:27:50 AM

To celebrate the reveal of the Carved from Brindlewood Creator's Kit achievement, we're holding a writing contest! The Gauntlet is famous for how we get the community involved in the creative process for our games, and we want to invite you to join in the fun! Our writing contests are a fantastic way to do some low-stakes game writing, and you don't have to have any experience to give it a shot!

We'll talk about the contest more at the end of this update, but first...

Join The Gauntlet Discord Server

As always, we want to invite you to join our server. Even if you aren't participating in the contest, The Between is a game with lots of unique and unusual mechanics, and the folks in our server are happy to discuss them with you, or just generally share what they love about these games. You can find our server here.

Shared World-building: Locations and The Unscene

One of the things that makes The Between innovative (and beloved) is how it invites players to get involved in the process of world-building. In The Between, it's not just the Keeper's job to describe the world; at key moments in gameplay, the Keeper invites the players to fill in details of The Between's London. There are two main ways this is done: Locations and The Unscene.

Each Location a hunter visits has a short description and what's called a "Paint the Scene" question. A Paint the Scene question is a question posed to the players that, when they answer it, they not only tell us what a Location looks, sounds, and smells like, but also help explore an idea associated with that Location. Put another way, it's thematic set dressing, and it's quite engaging and fun. Here are some examples:

Savile Row
Vibrant, bustling storefronts. Tailors laboring by lamplight. Relentless displays of
luxury and excess.
Paint the Scene: They say a perfect fit makes you feel like a new person. How do the
wares on display tempt you to reinvent yourself, even assume a new identity?

Whitechapel tenement house
Three stories. Beggars and other street people all over. Poorly lit.
Paint the Scene: This building was originally a charity project, now abandoned, for some wealthy do-gooder. What faded remnants of their largesse do you see around you?

The Limehouse School (workhouse)
Filthy children all over the place. A frustrated mistress storming away from a group of girls (not) learning to sew. The smell of unwashed bodies.
Paint the Scene: Workhouses like this are where poor children are sent to be managed until they’re old enough to be turned out. What signs of deprivation do you see?

The Unscene is something truly unique—there's nothing like it in any other TTRPG. In The Between, London is just as much a character in the story as the hunters in Hargrave House. One of the ways we explore that idea is through the Unscene. The Unscene is a scene taking place somewhere in the city on the same night as when the hunters are engaged with their monstrous quarry. You cut back and forth narrating between the Unscene and the hunter scene, and while the two have no direct connection to each other, players are invited to make thematic or sensory connections between them, which we call Echoes in the Night. The effect is a style of play that is highly cinematic, dramatic, and thematic. We think you'll love it. An example:

The Shrouded London Writing Contest

The writing contest invites you to create your own Locations and Unscenes! There are some small cash prizes (and winners will be made a publication offer), but it's mostly an excuse to learn more about the game, engage with other writers in our Discord, and have fun. You can learn more about the contest here.

We want to thank you for all your support during this campaign. We'll leave you now with artwork for the achievement we're currently trying to unlock, The Monochromatic Men of Three Mills Island!

Join The Gauntlet Discord Server!
over 1 year ago – Wed, Sep 25, 2024 at 04:27:53 PM

Day 2 of our crowdfunding for The Between has come to an end! Hereafter, we will only send updates when we reach a major milestone in the campaign, or have an important announcement to make.

Right now we're trying to unlock a brand new Playbook/Threat combo—The Dodger & The Wyrm! We'd like to invite you to join us in The Gauntlet Discord server. Our server is a really fun, welcoming place, where folks are excited about this game. Right now, we're chatting about The Dodger & The Wyrm in our channel for The Between. Come hang out with us, learn more, and, if you're still on the fence about backing, chat with people who have a lot of experience with it so you can make an informed decision.

Thanks so much for taking this journey with us! We'll leave you with a bit of brand-new artwork for The Order of the Azure Eyes, which unlocked earlier today.
